Introducing STROMA Films

After 11 incredible years of Rapid Visual Media, today we’re excited to introduce, STROMA Films.

New name, new brand but with the same Dougie and Brian at the helm steering a somewhat shinier ship and one that we’d like to think better reflects the unique brand of filmmaking that we’ve developed over the last decade.

We hope you like our new website where you can find out a little more about us and view some of our films.

Fashioned From Nature

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, otherwise known as the V&A is the world’s leading museum of art and design. It's permanent collection consists of over 2.3 million objects that span over 5,000 years of human creativity.

A current exhibition 'Fashioned From Nature' will run until 27 January 2019. The V&A states that it is 'the first UK exhibition to explore the complex relationship between fashion and nature from 1600 to the present day'. We have had the pleasure of producing 3 videos for 'The Future of Fashion' which is part of this exhibition. The Future of Fashion explores how the fashion industry uses vast quantities of natural resources, and meets some inventors, designers and companies that are making sustainable and environmentally friendly fabrics.

Pulp-It

This video gives a fascinating incite into making a new fabric based on paper that is both sustainable and environmentally friendly. It has been created by scientists and designers in Sweden and the UK.

Bolt Threads

Bolt Threads is a company based in California. They have developed a fabric that mimics the structure of spider silk. It requires neither the polluting chemicals of petroleum-derived materials nor the land, water and pesticides of conventionally farmed fibres.

Diana Scherer

Diana Scherer is an artist, designer and plant root weaver from The Netherlands. She trains the roots of plants to grow in intricate structures, creating a 3D textile. When the roots are fully grown, she removes them from the soil and cuts off the plant stems. The pieces produced are not yet suitable to be worn, but hint at a potential, more sustainable future in which we grow our own fashion in the ground. This will completely change how you view plant roots.

What is the V&A in Dundee?

V&A Museum of Design, Dundee

The V&A in Dundee will be the first design museum in the UK to be built outside London.  It is currently in the process of being built and will be open to the public by 2018. The unique design is by renowned architect Kengo Kuma.

The galleries in the museum will be dedicated to Scotland's design heritage and will show designs from the past and present along with exhibitions from new, young Scottish designers.   

We have been delighted to work with the staff at the V&A Dundee for the past few years. Our job has been to help put this new museum on the map by creating short films about their pre-opening exhibitions and the building of the museum. The work and effort put into the pre-opening programme has been amazing.

What is V&A Dundee?

This film introduces the design museum. We met up with curators, inspiring designers and heard from young people who've already benefited from V&A Dundee's community work.

Building V&A Dundee

How is V&A Dundee being built? In this short video, you will meet the architect Kengo Kuma, and some of the constructors and engineers. It will show you the complexity of the design and how precision engineering is required to complete the build of this stunning museum.

Car Design at Jaguar

V&A Museum of Design, Dundee

Prior to the new V&A Museum of Design being opened in Dundee in 2018, the staff have been working hard to put it on the map with many design projects such as the extremely successful Design in Motion.

Time Capsule in Dundee

The latest project is Time Capsule.  This project is offering students in Scotland studying Design at a Higher level to design a time capsule that will be a permanent, unique feature on display in the grounds of the new museum.  The prize will also consist of a placement at Jaguar for a week.

We were delighted to be involved with this project and produced a series of 3 short films aimed at inspiring students and school kids to follow their dreams.  The films show that by following your dreams and working hard anyone can have a career in design.

Jaguar Cars Design

Scottish designer Ian Callum is famous world wide for his car designs.  The designs he is most renowned for are the RS Cosworth and the Aston Martin Vanquish.  We talked to Ian about his career, car design and what inspired him to become a designer.

Gilbert & George - The Early Years

Who are Gilbert & George?

Gilbert Prousch and George Passmore are artists who met while studying sculpture at St Martin’s School of Art in London in 1967.  Gilbert is an Italian and George an Englishman.

Sometimes described as a collaborative duo they don’t agree and have said “It’s not a collaboration….We are two people, but one artist.”

During the 50 years that they have created art together, they have used a number of different mediums but unusually classified all their work as sculpture.  They have also incorporated themselves into the majority of their sculptures.  To begin to understand just a little about these wonderful gentlemen and their work, there are some articles on the Museum of Modern Art.

The Early Years

Between May and September this year, the Museum of Modern Art in New York held an exhibition of their Early Years’ work.  As part of this exhibition, they commissioned a short film where we were able to film Gilbert & George talking about their early work.

The Harmonium Project – Behind the Scenes with 59 Productions

Once again 59 Productions allowed us to film them at work.  This time we were given the opportunity to find out exactly what effort goes into creating a spectacular production for the Edinburgh International Festival. 

59 Productions were commissioned by the Edinburgh International Festival to create a brand new artwork to mark the opening of the 2015 festival and the 50^th anniversary of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus.  This was not a fairly simple case of filming the Edinburgh Festival Chorus performing John Adams’s choral work Harmonium, but it was to become an amazing piece of outdoor art.

They worked in conjunction with the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Design Informatics to create a piece of art that examines the effects singing has on both the performer and the listener.

A recording was made of Harmonium by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Edinburgh Festival Chorus conducted by Peter Oundjian and while it was being played projections were made on the Usher Hall to a very large audience.

Design in Motion – V&A Museum of Design, Dundee

The V&A Museum of Design, Dundee will be an international centre of design for Scotland, however the planned opening is not until June 2018.  Until that time there will be a pre-opening programme of events.  Design in Motion is a collaboration with the Travelling Gallery; a custom-built, mobile, contemporary art space inside a big beautiful bus, which brings high quality contemporary art exhibitions and events to schools and communities throughout Scotland.  The bus has been upgraded and re-designed for the Design in Motion exhibition.

All the designers featured use digital technologies to push the boundaries of their discipline.  Design in Motion has visited over 40 schools and colleges across Scotland since February this year and ended the tour outside the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

As part of this exciting project Rapid Visual Media were selected to create 3 films. 

Geoffrey Mann – Products in Motion

Geoffrey Mann is the Programme Director in Glass at Edinburgh College of Art.  His work has been exhibited around the world including The Museum of Modern Art in New York.  Mann is fascinated by transforming the ephemeral nature of time and motion, such as the flight of a bird or the fluttering of a moth, into forms that we can see and hold using photographic and digital technologies.   To learn more about his work and the man himself, please take time to watch our video.

Sophia George – Games in Motion

Sophia George is a games designer and artist.  She is already an accomplished games designer and has won several awards including BAFTA Breakthrough Brit (2013).  Our film allows you to meet Sophia and learn all about the making of her Strawberry Thief game.

Travelling Gallery – Design in Motion

Our final film provides the viewer with an insight into the Design in Motion project, how students and the public responded to the interactive gallery, the new technologies, and the skills of the 7 exciting Scottish designers.  The film also includes some stunning footage of the bus travelling around the beautiful Scottish countryside.

St. Peter’s Seminary, Cardross

St. Peter’s Seminary in Kilmahew on the outskirts of Cardross was completed and consecrated in 1966.  It was used until the late 1980s but is now in a dilapidated state.  

This ruin has created great interest as it is considered to be one of the most important examples of modernist architecture in Scotland.  The architects Andy MacMillan and Isi Metzstein of Gillespie, Kidd and Coia won the RIBA royal gold medal for this building.

NVA has produced an ambitious scheme to reclaim the future of this world-renowned seminary complex and its surrounding Victorian designed landscape and woodlands.  Combining partial restoration, consolidation and new design, the plans will create unique performance and exhibition spaces and establish a place for public art and knowledge

exchange in the 21^st century.

We were delighted to have been chosen to produce a short film to highlight NVA's campaign for support that will see this unique and amazing landscape re-imagined for future generations to discover and delight in.
